You can give families fighting cancer a home away from home
Too often, a cancer diagnosis means leaving everything behind.
For families in regional Australia, a cancer diagnosis brings an unexpected question: “Where are we going to live?”
3 Aussie kids diagnosed with cancer every day.
6 months average length of stay for long-term treatment families.
30% of Australians live 180km + from major healthcare.
Fight Cancer Foundation exists to help give families a real home near their treatment, for as long as they need one. We have two supported accommodation hubs, but right now, both homes and all the families in them, need your help.
When Lisa and Joel brought their eight-month-old daughter Audrey to BMDI House after two months in a tiny hospital room, they were overwhelmed with relief.
In hospital, Audrey barely had the space or energy to move, but at BMDI House, she suddenly had room to crawl across the living room floor — finally getting the chance to be a baby again and reach important milestones.
"Oh, this is actually quite a large space. It is bright and open. It really makes it have that home feeling. We finally have a place to be a family.”
- Lisa
Audrey had her first birthday at the accommodation, away from home. Lisa and Joel were in bits that they couldn't be with friends and family back home, but the staff at BMDI House made Audrey's first birthday feel so special.
They are finally finding their routine, like going on a big walk with Audrey in the pram and grabbing a coffee. When they are at BMDI House, even though Audrey is receiving treatment for leukaemia, the days feel a little more normal.
Hi I'm Mercia. I’m the Accommodation Manager here at Fight Cancer Foundation, but my job is really to be whatever a family needs when they are trying to fight cancer together.
I take care of the boring everyday stuff, so they can focus on getting better and I can’t do it without the support of our donors like you!
When you live regionally, a cancer diagnosis means packing a single bag and leaving your entire life behind to get to the city for life-saving treatment. Families reaching out for help from Fight Cancer – from you – are exhausted, terrified, and deeply stressed about money.
Because of your support, I get to welcome them into a home away from home. I can hand them a welcome pack, show them their room, and say: "Everything is going to be okay. You are safe here."
When a family is fighting cancer, they need a place to stay that:
- Is near treatment
- Feels like a home
- Has 24/7 support
- They know they can stay in for as long as they need
- Helps them to heal, recover and be together.
We need your help today so we can give families like Lisa, Joel and Audrey that space and that home away from home, for as long as they need it. Please help a family to get a home away from home when they’re fighting cancer. Donate before June 30.
